This video shows the power clay soil has on your leaky basement foundation walls. This home in St.Catherines was surrounded with clay soil that over the years of freeze-thaw cycles pushed the foundation into the point of being structurally unsound and needing some serious foundation repair.
A previous homeowner hid the problem by hiding the wet basement by finishing it. For this foundation repair, the majority of the foundation walls were able to be pushed back and reinforced with carbon fiber strapping.
Unfortunately, some of the foundation was beyond repair and needed to be replaced. We excavated the exterior foundation and removed the clay soil. The walls were pushed back in place, repairs were made to the walls and foundation waterproofing was installed to the exterior. Gravel was used to fill in the exterior to relieve pressure and allow better drainage around the home.
As time goes by all concrete foundations start to settle and move. Over time this can cause your foundation to start to crack. This is especially true here in the Hamilton and Burlington area.
Concrete is an excellent building material because it is so strong and sturdy, but unfortunately, it isn’t very flexible, and any shifting or moving will start to cause problems.
The crazy thing is that over 85% of homes in Canada simply do not have any form of rubberized membrane applications applied to their foundation’s walls.
Without this, the majority of homes will see some sort of concrete crack(s) show up in their foundation at some point. These cracks can lead to wet basements and the potential need to seek out foundation crack repair.
